Bullen Farm House

Extension to Listed Building

Bullen Farm House was first constructed in the 18th Century as an inn, the "Old Bull Inn", set within a wider agricultural landscape. Our clients bought the property to become their family home 50 years ago. The building stood in ruin after decades of neglect and decay. Further to extensive works to bring the property back into use, our clients have lived here and brought up their family in the building.

The children having flown the nest, Alison and Alan explored the option to downsize. Further to fruitless searches they opted to stay in the home and instead add a contemporary intervention, a new kitchen and dining room, re-directing the living spaces to overlook their well established garden.

The design takes a sensitive conservation architecture approach in form and external materials, while providing contemporary open plan living spaces to the history property

"An outstanding contemporary addition to a Grade II Listed Building that has revolutionised our clients' lifestyles"

The success of the project was secured through careful consideration of the construction, working hard to realise the extension to the highest standards of performance and finish, all within Alison and Alan's construction budget.

Traditional materials externally, with the stone being carefully chosen using sample panels - and then the stone cut to measure onsite. Internally, contemporary use of stone, timber and kitchen finishes to contrast with the more traditional. Under floor heating and fabric first thermal strategy to climatic control with large format thermally broken aluminiu bi-fold doors create a low-carbon internal environment.
